The important thing is to think about a balance between the artificial and nature. Originally Japanese housing embraced the exterior, including nature, but these days housing is being constructed as a space that is separated from the exterior. As a result, I feel that we are losing the balance that existed in the past. In consideration also of the changes in the global environment that are very much talked about today, I believe it is necessary for us to bring out the essential power of natural things and to think about the balance with advanced science and technology. What we architects and designers can do is to create new space using new materials. In a sense, it is perhaps also our mission to make demands on new materials.
