Background

What is a “sustainable society”?
A sustainable society is a society that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Our Common Future, United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development [WCED], 1987). From now on, while achieving a balance between human activity and nature, it is necessary to build a social system that maintains the global environment and enables people to enjoy an affluent and happy life.

What are “design instructors”?
Design instructors refer to people who gain expertise in a wide range of fields of design, such as architecture, product design, and interior design, serve as the leaders in teaching design technology and concepts covering the whole range of design to developing countries, and take the initiative in providing assistance to developing countries.
Through this project, as Japan’s largest university specializing in art and design, Musashino Art University aims to foster people who can undertake design instruction and who have a correct understanding of environmental problems, the form of sustainable resources, and the present conditions and issues of developing countries.
