Indonesia

Indonesia is a country with abundant nature and a diverse culture and history. It also has internationally well-known tourist spots, especially centered on the island of Bali. In recent years, however, Indonesia has been hit by numerous earthquakes and other natural disasters, and many people have suffered serious damage. These disasters include earthquakes off Sumatra (December 2004, March 2005, September 2007), an earthquake in central Java (May 2006), an earthquake off southwestern Java (July 2006), an eruption of Mount Merapi (March 2006), and heavy rain in Sulawesi (June 2006), Sumatra (December 2006), and Jakarta (January 2007). Japan and Indonesia have close relations, and Indonesia has been the biggest recipient of Japanese official development assistance for many years (with the exception of 2004).
