「ドローイング－思考する手のちから－」展

■企画趣旨概要：
　まだ文字を持たなかった祖先が洞窟の岩肌や獣の皮に描きはじめた時代や、粘土板やパピルスに描いた遠い時代から、素描（ドローイング）は、世界像を思考し創造する人間のもっとも根源的な表現手段でした。それはいまも、紙とクレヨンを与えられた幼い子供が、夢中で描き出すその姿にも明らかでしょう。
　文化の発達とともに、素描は、世界の模倣（ミメーシス）や写生、アイデアのスケッチ、本作の下絵など、多様な機能を持つようになりましたが、とりわけ西欧にあっては、それは３次元の世界を平面上に表現する術として、美術の分野に限らず、建築の設計図や医学の解剖図、博物学の図譜などを生みだしていきました。また墨と筆による異なる文化を持った東洋では、心・技の修練によって捉えられた簡素な自然の素描や巧緻な白描に、個我をこえた世界と美の本質に達することが尊重されました。めまぐるしく変貌し、一面では仮想化をつよめる現代にあって、ドローイングがアートの重要な要素として注目されているのも、脳だけでなく手とともに思考し、描きあらわすことで創造という生の行為を高めてきた人間の原理が必要とされているからではないでしょうか。
　造形教育と創造の揺籃の場である武蔵野美術大学創立80周年を記念する企画の一翼として、元教員と現職教員の素描とドローイング的な要素のある作品の森と環をたどる試みをとおして、時代をこえて探求される人間の創造性の根を照らす機会となることが望まれます。

Drawing: The Ability of Conscious Hands
In ancient times, when they did not yet have any characters for writing, our ancestors began to draw on the walls of their caves and on animal skins. In another distant age, people drew on clay tablets and on papyrus. As these examples show, drawing is the most basic means of expression for human beings thinking about and creating their image of the world. Even today, this can be seen clearly in the sight of young children who, when given paper and crayons, become totally absorbed in drawing.
     Together with the development of culture, drawing came to have various functions, such as copying (mimesis) and sketching the world, sketching ideas, and drawing rough sketches of full-fledged works. In the West especially, as a technique for expressing the three-dimensional world on a plane surface, drawing was not limited to the field of art but produced design plans in architecture, anatomical charts in medicine, diagrams in natural history, and so on. In the East, meanwhile, where a different culture developed based on black ink and brushes, respect was shown for achieving the essence of the world and beauty that transcended the self in simple drawings of nature or elaborate plain sketches resulting from spiritual and technical training.
     In the present age of bewildering changes and, in some respects, increased imagination, drawing is attracting attention as an important element in art because the fundamental principles of human beings---thinking not only with the brain but also with the hands and enhancing the raw act of creativity through drawing---are seen as necessary.
     As part of plans to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the founding of Musashino Art University, a cradle of design education and creativity, it is hoped that this exhibition will provide an opportunity to throw light on the roots of human creativity beyond generations by exploring the drawings and works that have drawing elements of both former and current faculty members and the relationships among them.
